Welcome to Red Elephant Yoga - The Home for Baby Boomers+ Who Want to Practice Yoga Safely!
Let's face it. The average out of shape, overweight, inflexible and/or 50+ person doesn't have an easy time going into a typical yoga class and start yoga.

As we age, our bodies change. We have different needs. We have different physical conditions. And if we do try a yoga class, we find that not many yoga teachers have been trained to teach those of us who are not so fit, not so skinny, not so young.

But, we hear about the benefits of yoga; our doctors tell us to go to a yoga class; other friends recommend trying it, too. We go, give it a try, and quit.

I see and hear about this time and again. When I ask why they quit, these are the frequent replies:
  • I tried it but it didn't work. 
  • Oh, I'd love to do yoga, but I can't bend like that. 
  • I tried yoga but it's not for me. 
  • I tried it but after a few classes, I got injured and had to quit. 
  • I don't have a body made for yoga.
  • I couldn't hear/understand what the teacher was saying. He/she talked too fast.
  • I couldn't keep up with the class.
  • The teacher never helped me.

So they quit and often return to a more sedentary lifestyle that only contributes to any chronic pains, diseases they may already have. 

What to do?
Not all yoga teachers are made the same. We all have different levels of training; special populations we prefer teaching; different interpretations of how yoga should be taught.

It's my belief that the key to everything is how much yoga training and continued education does the yoga teacher have? And, does the yoga teacher exemplify what they teach?

I believe teaching beginners is very challenging. Why? It requires:
  •  a solid knowledge of the body and how it works (anatomy); 
  • the ability to observe each student with an educated eye, knowing what to look for that could be harmful (advanced yoga education);
  • the ability to break down the poses in a safe way that helps the student manage their physical issues without leaving them frustrated; and,
  • helping the student learn to accept where they are right now in THIS moment. To find Joy in what they have accomplished; what they thought they could not do.

My passion is working with seniors; helping those with chronic conditions discover ways to avoid or at least reduce that old pain they've been carrying around for years. That's why I have spent so much time over the years studying, learning, experimenting and teaching seniors. 

I try to never lose sight of the fact that my body is the most perfect gift that has ever been given to me by my parents. I didn't go down to Walmart and pick it out. It was a gift - a one-of-a-kind treasure. And it is my responsibility to honor that gift by taking care of it.

My invitation to you
I invite you to join me on this journey that is designed only for what I call Elders-in-Training (EIT). Becoming an Elder is not easy. My mom would warn me before she died that, "growing old is not for sissies." That's true! It isn't easy. So join me in Yoga For Seniors class and see for yourself the positive changes that will take place in YOUR body.
